Did You Know These Famous Foods Have GI Tags?

Geographical Indication or GI tag is an indicator of exclusivity that identifies products and commodities as native to a particular region. Just like every other category, the GI tag also has a definite marker of specialty for food as well. India is diverse when it comes to food and there are ample delicacies that are famous not only in the country but in the world. Among several famous foods, there are some that have GI tags. Let us have a look!

Hyderabad’s Haleem

Haleem is a popular meat dish prepared during Ramzan across India and is eaten after the breaking of the day-long fast. It has so many versions across the country but the Hyderabadi version is one the most popular. Hyderabad Haleem’s great taste is attributed to its careful cooking process and a lot of spices. 

Dharwad Peda

An Uttar Pradesh native Ram Ratan Thakur migrated to Karnataka and started making peda. As time passed, this peda got famous with the secret recipe passing on from one generation to another. Also known as Thakur peda, this sweet has managed to stay of the same quality and gained much popularity. 

Kovilpatti Kadalai Mittai

A type of sweet chikki, Kadalai mittai is a specialty of Tamil Nadu’s Kovilpatti town. As per local traders, Thamirabarani River water is added to the ground nuts and organic jaggery which gives it its unique taste. It is coated with coloured coconut and transparent syrup.

Darjeeling Tea

Known for its great taste and aroma, Darjeeling is famous not just in North East but the in the entire country. This tea was the first product to get the GI tag in India, in October 2004. According to the Tea Board of India, this is the only tea grown at an elevation ranging from 600 to 2000 meters above sea level, in 87 identified gardens.

Bikaneri Bhujiya

Yes, our beloved Bikaneri Bhujiya also has a GI tag. This is, hands down, one of the most loved snacks of Rajasthan made with moth beans and besan. Originating in Bikaner, this snack needs no introduction as it has a generic identity in itself.

Bandar Laddu

Also known as thokkudi laddu, these sweets are from the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is nothing but a variety of regular besan ka laddu but with a lot smoother and creamier texture. It though originated in Rajasthan but is a staple of Bandar.
