How To Make Chana Masala In A Pressure Cooker

Chana masala is a dish that is really popular in Northern states of the country. There are different versions of the dish and every single recipe is as delicious as the next one. The best part about the dish is the fact that it is a one pot recipe, which makes it quick and efficient to cook. While there are versions of the dish that use more than one utensil but the most popular one requires just a pressure cooker to completely make the dish.

Before sharing the recipe of the dish, let us know what exactly chana masala is. If we eliminate the cream from it which is completely optional, chana masala is a completely vegan dish. It is famous in India as well as outside the country for being one of the easiest vegan preparations to make. This chickpea curry is ready in very less time and takes absolutely delicious. It has the base of onion, garlic, ginger and tomato puree. Here is a simple recipe to make it in pressure cooker.

Ingredients 

  • 2 cups soaked chana 
  • ½ cup tomato puree 
  • 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste 
  • 3 finely chopped onions 
  • 4-5 green chillies 
  • Cooking oil 
  • 1 tsp jeera powder 
  • 1 tsp haldi powder 
  • 1 tsp dhaniya powder 
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder 
  • 2-3 red chillies
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 dried red chilli
  • Fresh cream (optional) 
  • 1 tsp garam masala 
  • Chopped coriander

  • In a pressure cooker, heat up some cooking oil and add Bay leaves to it. 
  • Next, add dried dried chilli and then add chopped onions. 
  • After the onions turn the golden bro control my brown, add the ginger garlic paste and cook for 5-6 minutes. 
  • Now, add the tomato paste and cook for a couple of more minutes. 
  • Add all the powdered spices and cook till the raw smell goes away. It usually takes7-8 minutes on medium flame. 
  • Add the soaked and dried chickpeas and cook for another couple of minutes. Add water to the curry and close the lid of the pressure cooker.  
  • Cook till 4 whistles and then let the steam escape. 
  • Open the lid and then add cream, garam masala and chopped coriander leaves. 
  • Serve with puri, roti or chawal!
