Whole Wheat Burger Buns


 2 cups whole wheat flour

 1 cup of all-purpose flour

 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup

 2 tablespoons of olive oil

 1 cup of warm water

 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

 1 teaspoon of salt

 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

 Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)


 In a small bowl, combine warm water and honey (or maple syrup). Stir until the sweetener dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes frothy.

 In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients.

 Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the well. Gradually mix the wet and dry ingredients together until a sticky dough forms.

 Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much.

 Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

 Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Transfer the dough back to the floured surface and divide it into eight equal-sized portions.
