While desis across the world are passionate about food from their homeland, descriptions of Indian food in foreign restaurants are sure to provoke a chuckle from most Indians. In a recent example of this, Harsh Goenka shared an amusing tweet where he opined about how bizarre western descriptions for popular Indian foods take away from the joy of relishing them. A screenshot of a restaurant menu was shared by the business man – where dishes like idlis, dosas and medu vada were given brief descriptions and odd names.
The dosa – which was described as a ‘naked crepe’, mentioned that the rice batter crepe was served with a lentil soup, a tangy tomato and classi coconut relish. On the other hand, the idli was labelled ‘dunked rice cake delight’ – whose description read ‘type of savoury rice cake made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils and rice, dipped in lentil soup.’ In the same menu, the medu vada was also called ‘dunked doughnut delight’ and a description underneath which read ‘2 deep-fried savory doughnuts dipped in lentil soup’.

Expressing his amusement, Goenka captioned the photo saying, “Who knew vada, idli, and dosa could sound so fancy? With these strange names khaane ka mazaa khatam! Agree?” While some internet users echoed his sentiment, others were baffled at the prices of these otherwise affordable dishes with the dosa costing $17.59 dollars, the idlis priced at $15.39 and the medu vada for $16.49. The fun tidbits shared by the businessman from time to time keep users entertained; his most recent one also inviting netizens to reverse the treatment on western dishes like pizzas and burgers – one of whom described them as ‘videshi rotla’ and ‘petiz pav’.
