Grape Adulteration Video Goes Viral; 5 Ways To Remove Chemicals

A number of videos have been circulating online, which show grapes being chemically treated before they are being sent over to markets. India boasts a diverse range of grape varieties, including Sonaka Seedless, Thomson Seedless, Jumbo Seedless, Sharad Seedless, and many more. Their colour, texture, and taste are all affected by natural factors like rainfall, climate, humidity etc.

Elevation is also an important component in grape cultivation. Not all grapes can be shiny, spotless and healthy if they don’t have the perfect growing environment. However, grape adulteration has been growing at a shocking speed; several videos have been shared online from different parts of the country, which show grapes being coloured, polished, and chemically treated to make them look fresher and plumper.

A widely shared video showed a group of people dipping large crates of grapes in a foamy, chemical solution. These chemicals are often toxic and may not be food-grade, so they are not fit for human consumption and may impact your health. It may not be easy to identify chemically treated or adulterated grapes when you see them in the markets. But there are some ways to remove toxic chemicals from grapes at home. Let’s have a look at some of them.

Rinsing with Water

One of the simplest and most accessible ways to clean grapes is by rinsing them with water. This method is effective at removing surface dirt, debris, and some pesticide residues. Start by placing the grapes in a colander or strainer. Hold the colander under cool, running water and allow the water to flow over the grapes.

Gently agitate the grapes with your fingers, ensuring that all surfaces come into contact with the water. Continue rinsing for at least 30 seconds to ensure thorough cleaning. Once rinsed, shake off any excess water and transfer the grapes to a clean bowl or plate for consumption.

While rinsing with water is a straightforward method, it may not completely eliminate all pesticide residues, especially those that have penetrated the skin of the grapes.

Soaking in Vinegar Solution

Another effective method for cleaning grapes involves soaking them in a vinegar solution. Vinegar is effective at removing surface residues and pesticides. Vinegar, particularly white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, is known for its ability to break down residues and remove pesticides. In a large bowl or container, mix equal parts water and vinegar to create a cleaning solution.

Submerge the grapes in the vinegar solution, ensuring that they are fully covered. Allow the grapes to soak for approximately 5-10 minutes. After soaking, remove the grapes from the solution and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Shake off any excess water and transfer the grapes to a clean container.

Using a Produce Wash

For those who prefer a convenient and ready-to-use solution, commercial produce washes are available on the market. These products are specifically formulated to remove residues, pesticides, and contaminants from fruits and vegetables. Here's how to use a produce wash. Place the grapes in a bowl or container and spray or immerse them in the produce wash solution.

Allow the grapes to sit in the solution for the recommended duration. After soaking, rinse the grapes thoroughly under running water to remove any remaining residue. Shake off excess water and transfer the grapes to a clean container for consumption.

Using Baking Soda

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a versatile household ingredient that can be used for cleaning fruits and vegetables. Its alkaline nature helps break down residues and contaminants.

In a large bowl or container, mix water with baking soda at a ratio of 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 2 cups of water. Submerge the grapes in the baking soda solution and allow them to soak for approximately 15 minutes. After soaking, rinse the grapes thoroughly under running water to remove any baking soda residue. Shake off excess water and transfer the grapes to a clean container.

Using a Fruit and Vegetable Brush

For stubborn residues or dirt that may be clinging to the surface of grapes, using a fruit and vegetable brush can help provide a more thorough cleaning. These brushes are specifically designed with soft bristles to avoid damaging delicate fruits like grapes. Place the grapes in a colander hold the colander under running water and wet the grapes thoroughly. Take the fruit and vegetable brush and gently scrub the surface of the grapes, paying attention to any areas with visible dirt or residues.

Continue scrubbing for a few minutes, ensuring that all surfaces of the grapes are cleaned. Rinse the grapes again under running water to remove any loosened debris.
