The search engine Google unveiled its top trending searches over the course of the past 12 months—alluding to topics of interest which witnessed a high spike in traffic over a sustained period—in comparison to the previous year. From technology, lifestyle, entertainment, health, sports and even AI—the year of trends covered a gamut of subjects that held the world’s attention—some of which were rather surprising. Although different that the ‘top searches’, these topics witnessed a meteoric growth in developing topics as opposed to ones that have been long-standing. Statistics revealed that ‘tell me about’ searches rose to 70% while ‘how do I’ ones ranked an all-time high of 25%.

Within the country, the South Indian breakfast classic of idli dominated the ranks of the top food searches while the Pornstar Martini became the only cocktail to feature on the food-dominated list in second position. Modak or ukadiche modak cinched the third position followed by other preparations such as thekua, Ugadi pachadi, beetroot kanji and gond katira. The festive specialities of Thiruvathirai kali and kolukattai also piqued the curiosity of many—a testament that Indian regional food was starting to get its time in the spotlight. The British classic of Yorkshire pudding ranked eighth was the only international dish that found a place on the listing.
Global Food Trends
An interesting pattern that emerged in global search trends was that the top searched food items essentially ‘upgraded’ popular favourites. While some noted that hot honey came up as the top search globally, caviar chicken nuggets also dominated the charts briefly. Both the condiment and the luxe version of the fast food snack were also followed by three different chicken preparations—the Marry Me chicken, the white chicken chili and the classic roasted chicken. In the top 10 list, the chia pudding was notably the only sweet offering which made the cut for a list dominated by savoury dishes. The herby Argentinian condiment of chimichurri ranked third on the list while innovative popular favourites such as the lasagna soup and zucchini bread featured on the sixth and eighth positions respectively. Vegetables such as bean sprouts and bell peppers also found a spike in searches, although the reasons for those aren’t exactly clear.

Advancements in mixology have also reflected in online user dynamics—as far as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are concerned. Leading the list of trends was the gin-based Broken Plane cocktail which is said to be a variation of the Paper Plane. Other drinks include the London Calling made with gin and fino Sherry, the pineapple-laced French martini, the Spanish sangria and Azalea—the signature drink of the Masters tournament, made using gin or vodka, pineapple and lime juice as well as grenadine. Given how sober-curious trends have fuelled the newer generation of bar hoppers this year, low and no-ABV beverages also emerged as one of the top trends of 2025.

Classic cocktails are also being perceived in new light—where unusual or exotic ingredients, herbs, spices and edible flowers are giving them a makeover. Espresso martinis continued to enjoy their popularity while other coffee-based concoctions as well as caffeinated bases like tea and cold brews led the way. Sustainability concepts was also a major factor of exploration for users along with experiential drinking which centered around themed bars and multi-sensory cocktail experiences. Agave spirits, savoury and umami flavours as well as the ‘swicy’ were some of the other notable trends to close off the list for the year. Technology is making a foray into the bar space since high-tech tools are playing a key role to elevate cocktail presentations; think vapourisers and sous vide techniques.
