While the traditional modaks are made with freshly grated coconut and jaggery, you can also experiment with many more flavours like chocolate modak, mawa modak, chana dal modak, dry fruits modak, and so on. As per your preference, you can take your pick and add modak to the festive spread.

For a crispy snack, you can make chakli for Ganesh Chaturthi. Typically made with besan (gram flour), rice flour, and spices like cumin powder, sesame seeds, ajwain (carom seeds), and salt, chakli is a deep-fried snack which has its unique spiral shape. You can make it with its mould or give it a rough circular shape with thin threads rolled into a spiral and serve.

Sabudana Vada

Vada in general is a popular South Indian snack. But for festivities or fasting, sabudana vada takes the front row. Made with soaked sabudana (tapioca pearls), mashed potatoes, chopped onion, chopped coriander, crushed peanuts, and some green chillies, the mixture is prepared. With small portions shaped into patties, you can shallow fry or deep fry to make sabudana vada.

Dahi Poha

Dahi poha is another simple and quick-to-prepare snack for Ganesh Chaturthi. The light flavourful snack is made with soaked poha (flattened rice), dahi (curd), a mix of chopped vegetables, and a blend of spices. Garnished with chopped coriander leaves, mustard seeds, a squeeze of lemon, and fried peanuts, you can add dahi poha to your traditional meal.

Coconut Barfi

Coconut barfi is a traditional Indian dessert that puts toasted coconut to its best use. Also, it’s easy to make and not to mention, super tasty. All you need to do is cook toasted coconut flakes with ghee, sugar, milk, and dry fruits and nuts. After the barfi is made, you can garnish it with grated coconut to make it irresistible.

Puran Poli

Ganesh Chaturthi will be incomplete without Maharashtra’s famous sweet flatbread - Puran Poli. It is made with chana dal, jaggery, ghee, cardamom, and nutmeg. The mixture is kneaded into a dough and is then cooked on tawa till both sides are golden brown. Thanks to the sweet profile and widespread love, puran poli is one of the dishes made during the 10 festive days of Ganpati puja.
