Not storing food the right way leads to white spots on them. This is actually fungal growth. Usually, our mothers take care of these things. I am the kind of person who didn’t have any idea about managing food and doing kitchen work till I had to live alone in Delhi. Believe me; I used to always end up wasting food. One of the reasons behind dumping the food used to be mold growth on it. But now, all the permutations, combinations, and humble pieces of advice from my mother and mother-in-law have made me a pro at handling this problem.

As per a UN study, ‘one-third of the world’s foods go wasted every year.’ Among this, a larger part of the waste consists of moldy food. When microscopic fungi reproduce on food, you see a hair-like branching structure that makes our food unhygienic and unsafe to eat. Here, we are going to tell you some tips and tricks to prevent mold growth on food but firstly let’s know what leads to this.

Any food that’s warm and moist is a perfect home for bacteria to thrive. Salty, acidic, dry, and very cold conditions are not favourable for pathogens to grow. That’s why you see pickles last longer than fresh onions and strawberries. Let’s now have a look at ways that can help in preventing mold development.

  1. Always keep your fridge clean from inside as an unclean environment or spoiled food can lead to the growth of pathogens on fresh foods. Also, Keep such food items away from fresh ones.
  2. Do not store food in the refrigerator without covering it. Also, leftovers should be used within 3-4 days especially cut vegetables and fruits.
  3. Do not keep perishable food items in open cans. Immediately empty such containers and put the foods in clean storage containers with covers. Also, refrigerate it immediately.
  4. Dishtowels should not be wet all the time as that may spread mold around and also lead to a musty smell.
