Cook Street Style Pav Bhaji At Home

King of the street foods, Pav Bhaji is one of the most delicious evening snacks. It is prepared with a mixture of vegetables and a unique blend of spices. The dish is served with a soft bread roll which is known as Pav. Also, a special spice mix known as Pav Bhaji Masala is added to the Bhaji to make it flavourful. This masala powder is easily present in many Indian stores and it can be made at home as well.

The dish has a long history as it originated in Mumbai when the textile industry business was thriving Pav Bhaji was used to serve as fast food for the textile workers to provide them with adequate nutrients from the combination of vegetables. The recipe received huge popularity and hence become one of the finest street food dishes in India. Nowadays, Bhaji can be prepared with a lot of other variants such as cheese, paneer and mushroom. 

Let’s dig into the recipe! 

Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Servings: 4 

Ingredients:

4 Potato

4 Tomato

1 Capsicum

Handful Green Peas

Handful Coriander Leaves

2 tsp Ghee

1 tsp Cumin Seeds

2 tsp Pav bhaji Powder

1 to 1.5 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder 

6 Pav

Method:

Take the potatoes and rinse them. After rinsing them, remove the mud skin of these potatoes. Now cut them into half and cook them in a pressure cooker till they turn soft and mushy 

Once these potatoes are boiled, transfer them to a plate and mash them well

Next, get some tomatoes and capsicum and chop them into small pieces. 

Take a pan and put ghee and cumin seeds in it. Heat the pan on a low flame. Once the seeds start to splutter, add fine capsicum pieces to it. Stir them for approximately 2 minutes. Then add green peas and mix again. Now include tomatoes as well and stir. again. Finally, let it cook for approximately 5 minutes

 Once the tomatoes get soft and pulpy put all the veggies in the pan. Now, add turmeric powder, pav bhaji powder and salt as per your taste. Mix all the ingredients well. Now add mashed potatoes and a cup of water as well. Let it cook till they form a thick gravy Finally Bhaji is ready. Garnish it with coriander leaves

Now, to roast the pav, take a non-sticky pan and heat it. Roast the pav with some butter. Pav Bhaji is ready. Serve it along with a piece of lemon and onion 

Important Points To Note:

Use good quality or homemade Pav Bhaji masala as it is the main thing which gives taste and flavour to the dish 

To make the recipe spicier, you can always add some red chilly powder or chopped green chillis in the Bhaji

As per your taste and consistency required, you can add more or less water to the Bhaji

Potato, tomato and capsicum are the best suitable vegetables for this recipe. You can also add pumpkin, cauliflower or other vegetables to prepare bhaji

Pav Bhaji is mostly prepared on a large flat Tawa in many restaurants but you can easily cook it using a wok or frying pan at home.
