 Use a knife to delicately extract the coconut meat from the shell once the coconut has been broken open. To make blending easier, chop the coconut meat into small pieces.

 Blend the coconut meat bits in a food processor. Cover the coconut meat with water, then add more. Use more water for a thinner consistency and less for a thicker coconut milk. 1 part coconut meat to 2 parts water is a typical ratio.

 For a few minutes, blend the coconut meat and water at a high speed until the mixture is smooth. The coconut meat will be finely blended, and the water will take on a milky colour.

 Place a cheesecloth, nut milk bag, or fine mesh strainer over a dish or container to separate the coconut milk from the coconut pulp. Squeeze or press the combined mixture through the strainer to extract as much liquid as you can. This is your own handmade coconut milk.

 Repeat the blending and straining procedure using the same coconut meat and a little more water if you want to get more coconut milk out of the pulp. The result will be coconut milk that is thinner.

 Put the freshly prepared coconut milk in a spotless glass jar or container. For up to three to four days, keep it in the refrigerator. It's better to use homemade coconut milk within a few days because it doesn't include preservatives.
