Canelazo: A Hot Alcoholic Beverage Ideal For This Chilled Season

A chilly day begins and ends with a warming glass of any comforting drink. This is the beauty of winter season, it gets us all caught up in the joy of sipping on a glass of a hot beverage all day long. This ancient hot beverage will surely help you get through the winter blues. Canelazo is an alcoholic beverage that is typically made by mixing together cinnamon in water and then finishing it off with a splash of fruit juice and alcohol. There are times when a glass of canelazo is prepared even without the addition of alcohol. In Peru, it is mixed with corn beer that is made for fermenting it in a huge vessel for several days. In most countries, the drink is prepared with aguardiente which is a distilled liquor resembling brandy, made from sugarcane especially in South Africa. Canelazo is mainly relished in the Andean highlands of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and northern Argentina. The origins of this piquant beverage dates back to Columbia. Some believe that the drink was being enjoyed in the Andes even before in Columbia. In the streets of Ecuador, the drink is often sold by street vendors day and night during the holidays. Especially amidst the festivities of Christmas, this drink is sold everywhere from small towns to posh areas. So without further ado, let’s get into the making of this drink at home.

Ingredients-

  • 2 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 ½ glass water
  • 30ml rum
  • 10ml lemon juice
  • Sugar as per taste
  • 2-3 cloves

Steps in the making-

  • Take a saucepan and add water it. Mix cinnamon and cloves into water and let it boil for a few minutes.
  • Now take a glass and pour any of your favorite fruit juice into it. Also, add sugar and a splash of rum into it. Stir everything well.
  • Once the water has boiled, pour it in the glass. Once again, stir and mix well.
  • Your drink is ready to serve and relish.
