Coconut Milk Rice Porridge: Tried This Comforting Breakfast Dish

Healthy, yummy and satisfying grandmother recipes are always close to our hearts. Those recipes are an all-time favourite and can be enjoyed forever. One such recipe is simple and comforting, Coconut Milk Rice Porridge also known as Dwadashi Ganji. It is a filling breakfast dish which is vegan as well.

 The easy-to-prepare aromatic dish is served widely in South India. 

This dish can be served as a whole meal with stir-fried vegetables and pickles as side dishes or can also be served as a side dish with regular dosa.

This Dwadashi Ganji has a lot of health benefits and is a healthy dish which can be served to children as well as vegan lactation mothers. The dish is filled with coconut milk which is good to have at least once a week for easy digestion as it helps in cooling down the body. Here's how to prepare Rice Porridge easily at home.

  • 1 cup Raw Rice
  • 1.5 cups Fresh Grated Coconut


  • For the preparation of Rice Porridge begin with coconut milk. Put the freshly grated coconut and a cup of water into a grinder, and blend them to form a fine puree. Now put the puree into a strainer. Squeeze it properly so that extract coconut milk gets extracted
  • Now, add the squeezed coconut again to the grinder and mix it along with 1/2 cup of water. Now, strain this puree also and take out all the coconut milk. Now approximately 2 to 2.5 cups of fresh coconut milk are collected and ready 
  • Now take raw rice in a bowl, and rinse them with some water. Once done, drain off the water. Now put approximately 3.5 cups of fresh water into the rice and pressure cook it just like you do to cook rice daily. Once done, leave it for a while so that the pressure subsides by itself. It generally takes 5 to 10 minutes to cook rice
  • In this step, take a vessel and add cooked rice as well as coconut milk to it followed by boiling them. Let it be in simmer for approximately 4 minutes. Turn off the flame afterwards
  • Finally, Coconut Milk Rice Porridge topped with ghee is prepared easily at home.

 Important Points To Note:

  • To bring the perfect flavours, it's really important to use fresh coconut. Also, have enough coconut milk so that the dish can be prepared without compromising on the main ingredients 
  • You can also use store-bought coconut milk to prepare this rice porridge recipe
  • Ensure to cook rice in enough water. Try to use it more than you usually do as fluffy, grain-separated rice is not good for the preparation of this porridge
  • The dish tastes best when served with salt and topped with ghee
  • The consistency of this porridge can be varied as per your taste. You can always change the quantity of coconut milk used
