Biryani To Lassi: Matcha-Infused Dishes Indians Didn’t Ask For

Matcha, once just a humble Japanese tea cherished for its earthy flavour, calming zen vibes, and detoxifying properties, has undergone a dramatic transformation. Traditionally whisked and sipped during quiet tea ceremonies, this bright green powder was once a symbol of mindfulness and health. But thanks to the ever-churning engine of social media trends and a certain obsession with “fusion,” matcha has now been kidnapped, desi-fied, and hurled into full-on chaos mode in Indian kitchens.

What began innocently enough with matcha lattes and skincare face masks has spiralled into a full-blown culinary rebellion. And, of course, as with every Instagram trend, once one person jumps in, everyone follows like it's the finale of MasterChef and the only ingredient left in the pantry is matcha.

Matcha Biryani

Just when we were learning to forgive the elaychi in biryani, the universe threw this curveball: Matcha Biryani. Yes, this actually exists. Heena Kausar Raad, a food vlogger and baker, posted a video on Instagram captioned: “International Baking Course mei bani Matcha Biryani.” You read that right; baking course. Biryani. Matcha. Together. In the video, Heena enthusiastically blends green matcha powder into rice like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Her students nervously laugh. The internet? Not so kind. One user commented, “Even her students are embarrassed. Please stick to baking.” Another added, “Somewhere, a Hyderabadi just fainted.”

Gulkand Tukda Matcha Rabri

Just when we thought we were done, Gurugram-based chef Vinay Trilokya decided to go full Bollywood plot twist: Gulkand Tukda Matcha Rabri. Yes, the good old shahi tukda got a green makeover with matcha rabri and a rose preserve vibe. The post was captioned, “The matcha affair”. And honestly, it does sound like the title of a spicy OTT web series.

Matcha Dalgona Lassi

Remember the dalgona coffee phase during lockdown? Whipping, frothing, and aesthetic backgrounds? Now picture that, but with matcha and lassi. Because why not, right? Chef Nishant Choubey introduced this crossover event, giving netizens Matcha Dalgona Lassi. It’s foamy, it’s frothy, and it’s green. Internet reactions? Let’s just say... the silence was louder than the blender.

Matcha Rasmalai

This one’s for the sweet-toothed and spiritually confused. Content creator Vidhi Dwipam shared a recipe combining her two loves: matcha and rasmalai. Her reasoning? As a non-coffee drinker, she wanted a “comforting” twist. Well, comfort is subjective. Some called it innovative; others, sacrilege. One poor soul commented, “My rasmalai trauma just got a sequel."

Would You Try These Green Mutations?

So, here’s the big question: would you take a bite (or sip) of these matcha-infused Indian marvels? Or are you ready to blacklist the word "fusion" altogether?

Love them or loathe them, one thing’s clear: Indian kitchens will never stop experimenting, and Instagram will never stop watching.
