Whenever we get sick, we do have medicines and consult doctors. But the one thing that we mostly rely upon is the Dadi and Nani ke nuskhe. Almost every time, these hacks have saved us, especially in the case of common illnesses. One such go-to remedy for the common cold in Punjabi households is ‘Besan ka sheera’. Believe me, this remedial recipe is not going to disappoint you.

Since it is made up of besan or chickpea flour, milk, ghee, turmeric, and black pepper, the Besan ka Sheera is an ultimate remedy for flu, cold, and fever. Besides, it tastes yummy. Besan ka Sheera is a semi-thick beverage that doesn’t take more than 5 minutes in getting ready to be served. But one can always add milk to make Sheera in their desired consistency.

The ingredients used in Besan ka Sheera need no introduction of how good and effective they are. Besan is itself a powerhouse of antioxidants that helps clear the nasal tract while turmeric and black pepper are best known for their anti-bacterial properties that can help in providing relief from severe cold. On having Besan ka Sheera, a person gets a good sleep which also plays an important role in curing the illness. Ideally, Sheera should be consumed hot and right before bedtime.

 If some Ayurveda experts are to be believed, Besan ka Sheera is an ideal remedy to cure a runny nose. Besan ka Sheera has been a tested and effective hack in Punjabi households for ages and has never failed in giving quick results. One can always add some jaggery or sugar to make it even tastier but all the ingredients are a must. Let us give you a glimpse of how the Besan ka Sheera is made.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Besan or Chickpea Flour
  • 1¼ tbsp Ghee
  • 2 cups warm milk
  • ¼ tsp freshly grounded black pepper
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp green cardamom powder
  • 4 tsp sugar (you can also take jaggery as per taste)

Method

  • Add Ghee to a heavy-bottomed non-stick pan and heat it.
  • Add Besan and roast it till brown and aromatic.
  • Stir continuously to cook it evenly.
  • Slowly add milk and whisk properly to avoid the formation of lumps
  • Add turmeric powder, black pepper powder, cardamom powder
  • Add sugar/jaggery and mix well
  • Stir the mixture for 4-5 minutes and it will be ready
  • Switch off the flame.
  • Top with nuts and serve

Some things to be taken care of

  • You can add more milk if you want a liquid consistency
  • Don’t drink water for at least 30 mins after having Sheera
  • Don’t cook the Sheera too much otherwise it would get thicker
  • Have this Sheera for three days and see the results yourself
