As per Ayurveda, what you eat, when you eat, and how you eat all help in shaping your emotional and spiritual well-being. Planning your meal as per Vedic sciences becomes all the more important on Monday, or Somvar, as it is the start of the week. Since Monday is ruled by the Moon, or Chandra Maa, Ayurveda suggests that you have foods that soothe your mind, support mental peace, and are gentle on the digestive system.
To get a deeper look into the auspicious foods to consume on a Monday, Slurrp interviewed Dr Partap Chauhan, the Founder and Director of Jiva Ayurveda, a renowned Ayurveda Acharya and author. Read on to get an exclusive bit on the satvik foods you should eat and avoid to start your week in the best possible way.
Satvik Foods To Eat On Mondays
Milk and milk-based products
Since both Monday and cow’s milk are ruled by the Moon, Dr Partap advises that you drink a glass of A2 cow’s milk. You can also consume milk-based products like paneer, curd, buttermilk, ghee, etc.
Safed Petha
Safed petha, also known as white pumpkin, or ash gourd, has cooling properties, making it the perfect addition to your Monday meal. You can make pethe ki sabzi and pair it with puris or rotis or make a rich kaddu ka halwa, and savour.
Coconut
For centuries, the coconut has been a symbol of purity and auspiciousness in Indian rituals. “Since coconut is a natural stress reliever, there’s no better way to start your week with fresh coconut water, coconut milk, or even pairing your meals with nariyal chutney,” says Dr Chauhan.
Khichdi
The traditional Indian one-pot meal, khichdi, is known for its nourishing and easily digestible properties. Elaborating on the Ayurvedic side, Dr Chauhan explains, “ On Mondays, a simple moong dal khichdi with ghee, turmeric, and cumin balances Vata and Pitta, supports Agni (digestive fire), and grounds your energy.”
Sabudana
Many people across the country observe a Somvar ka vrat. One of the most popular ingredients on their vrat thali is sabudana, or tapioca pearls. If you want to prepare your Monday meal as per Ayurveda, don’t forget to add sabudana. Whether you can make sabudane ki khichdi or kheer, it is energetically appropriate to start your week.
Seasonal Fruits
The summer fruits with high water content, like watermelons, musk melons, pears, etc also perfect for consuming on a Monday. Not only do these fruits keep you hydrated throughout the day, but they also have Chandra-balancing properties to keep your mood uplifted.
Foods To Avoid On Mondays
- Avoid spicy, oily, and fermented foods that disturb the mind and overheat the system.
- Lower the caffeine consumption on Mondays as it can agitate Vata and increase restlessness.
- Skip heavy meats and rajasic foods like onions, garlic, and chillies. These disrupt emotional balance when you need to be peaceful at the start of the week.
