Indian cuisine is going places, and we have our wonderfully skilled and talented chefs to thank for the same. There are a number of Indian-origin Michelin-starred chefs creating ripples across the world with their innovative dishes, but chef Vineet Bhatia, the first chef of Indian origin to be awarded a Michelin star has added another feather to his already loaded hat. The Indian/British chef, restaurateur, author, and media personality was recently bestowed upon the honour of being awarded an MBE or Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire. Some other international stars who have been awarded an MBE in the past included Adele, Ed Sheeran and Marcus Rashford. He was awarded for his “services to UK Cuisine, to Hospitality and to International Trade”, as per the citation.
Chef Vineet took to Twitter to share about his recent accomplishment, he wrote, “Honoured to be the first Michelin-starred chef of Indian origin to be awarded an MBE. A wonderful privilege to have the opportunity to make the world “See things differently” about the United Kingdom”, Further, he dedicated the win to his wife and mother and thanked them for their unconditional love and support.
What Is An MBE?
Simply put, an MBE is an appointment to the Order of the British Empire. It is a huge accomplishment for people from all walks of life. You can be a singer, chef or philanthropist, if your work for society is worth honouring, you are eligible for an MBE.
This special honours system was initiated by King George during World War One in 1917 to laud and appreciate the efforts of civilians and servicemen in non-combat roles.
There are a total of five ranks, but three are the most common. The MBE is the lesser of the three, that comes after the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) and the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
