Baking day in a 17th century kitchen, the brewing of ancient wine, a mother making apple pie with her children... these are just some of the subjects peopling the finalists' photographs in the 'The Philip Harben Award for Food in Action' category of the recently announced Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2023 awards. As reported previously by Slurrp, the overall winner is Jon Enoch, a UK-based photographer who submitted a portrait of a candy floss seller from Mumbai for the competition.

'Anchang Sugar Dance Artist' by Zhonghua Yang was named the winner in the 'The Philip Harben Award for Food in Action' category. Yang's photograph shows a vendor weaving magic with spun sugar at a market.

As part of our ongoing coverage of the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2023, we're taking a look at the seven finalists in this category, whose images capture the moment when food undergoes a transformation.

'Deep in the Cellar' by Andy Kerry

Sampling a batch of Cheddar at Isle of Mull Cheese. Using a cheese iron enables the cheesemaker to asses the texture, maturity, and flavour of the cheese without opening it up. The Reade family have been making traditional farmhouse cheese at their farm, Sgriob-Ruadh, on the island for 40 years.

'Food for their Animals' by Shyjith Onden Cheriyath

These workers are mixing different types of packed food in their own way. After mixing it will be repacked and transferred to cattle tents. It is a very dusty process and this is the daily routine for these workers. They cover their faces to protect themselves from the dust. It was my first visit to Al Qusais cattle market and I captured every moment of this process.
