There are endless theories that address the origins of the word “cocktail”. Here’s the most popular one: The mispronunciation of the French word ‘coquetier’.

The first time the term was ever formally used was in 1798 in a British newspaper. But it became a part of the popular vocabulary only in 1806, when it found a mention in the The Balance, and Columbian repository, described as a “stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water and bitters.”

Today’s definition of a cocktail is a mixed alcoholic drink. Cocktails are made with adding juices, soft drinks and even fruits to alcohol.

The last decade has seen a rebirth of cocktails, with drinks like the breakfast martini becoming a staple at pubs and bars. If you want to find out more about them, you’ll have to take a dip into this quiz.
