Rice is much more than a side dish in South Indian cuisine. It is the base for quick weekday lunches, temple-style offerings, travel meals, and comforting dinners. Across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, rice recipes are a common part of home cooking because they are filling, flavourful, and can be easily adapted as per seasonal ingredients. Traditionally, these rice dishes are made by mixing cooked rice with fresh tempering, spice pastes, or podis. However, with the help of modern rice cookers like Usha’s Rice Cooker, it has become easier to prepare these recipes in a more convenient and one-pot style.  From tamarind-heavy puliyodarai to coconut rice filled with curry leaves, here are some South Indian rice recipes that are worth trying in a rice cooker.

Lemon Rice

Lemon rice is one of the easiest South Indian rice dishes to prepare in a rice cooker. Known for its bright yellow colour and tangy flavour, lemon rice is popular as a lunchbox meal and temple-style prasad. Once the rice is cooked, a tempering of mustard seeds, curry leaves, peanuts, green chillies, and turmeric can be added directly into the cooker. Fresh lemon juice is usually mixed in only after switching the cooker off to maintain its sharp flavour. This results in a light, comforting, and ideal meal, perfect for hot summer afternoons.

Tamarind Rice

Puliyodarai, also known as tamarind rice, is known for its spicy and slightly sour taste. Puliyodari is traditionally associated with temple food in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Like lemon rice, this variety also stores well and is often packed for travel. Rice cookers are perfect for this dish because the rice is cooked well in the cooker, and the tamarind mixture is prepared separately. Once it is mixed with roasted peanuts, curry leaves, and spice powder, the dish develops a rich flavour that tastes even better after resting for a while.

Coconut Rice

Coconut rice is a simple but flavourful dish that uses fresh coconut found abundantly in South Indian cooking. This rice recipe is popular in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and is often eaten with pickle, papad, or simple curries. With the help of a rice cooker, you need to cook rice first and then mix it with a tempering of grated coconut, mustard seeds, urad dal, dried red chillies, and curry leaves. You can also add cashews for extra crunch. If you want a quick dinner on busy workdays, coconut rice can be the perfect option for that. The dish works especially well as a quick dinner.

Tomato Rice

Tomato rice is a popular one-pot meal made with tomatoes, onions, and basic spices. It is common, especially in Karnataka and Andhra households, because it can be prepared quickly using pantry staples. Rice cookers are perfect for tomato rice because everything can cook together in one pot. Tomatoes release moisture that flavours the rice deeply, and the whole spices and green chillies add warmth. Tomato rice is often served with raita, chips, or boiled eggs.

Curd Rice

Curd rice is one of the most comforting South Indian rice dishes, especially during summer. Known for its cooling effect, curd rice is often eaten at the end of meals and is deeply associated with home-style comfort food. With the help of rice cookers, you can create soft rice that blends easily with curd and milk. A final tempering of mustard seeds, curry leaves, ginger, and green chillies gives the dish flavour without making it heavy. You can also add pomegranate, grapes, or grated carrots for some visual appeal.

Bisibele Bath

Bisi Bele Bath is a hearty Karnataka-style rice dish made with lentils, vegetables, tamarind, and spices. Unlike lighter rice recipes, this dish is thicker, richer, and closer to a complete one-pot meal. Although it is traditionally made in pressure cookers, rice cookers are also perfect for handling the slow cooking required for bisibele bath. Rice, dal, vegetables, and masala are cooked together, and these ingredients create a comforting dish often served with boondi or papad.

Pudina Rice

Mint rice, or pudina rice, is known for its fresh herbal flavour and vibrant green colour. It is especially popular during summers because mint gives the dish a refreshing taste. This rice can be made perfectly in a rice cooker by blending mint leaves, coriander, green chillies, and garlic into a paste before cooking it with rice. This fragrant rice pairs well with raita or fried snacks.
