The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of Mumbai's five most well-known private clubs, followed by inspections that allegedly found serious food security and hygiene breaches. According to the reports, officials found cockroach and fly infestations, expired food items, unsanitary kitchen environments, poor food storage approaches and unsatisfactory sanitation.
The clubs that are affected include Cricket Club of India (CCI), Willingdon Sports Club, MIG Cricket Club, RK Juhu Gymkhana and Aparna Juhu Gymkhana. In the same line of action, the FDA also issued a notice to a restaurant serving within Goregaon Sports Club after it conveyed similar shortcomings. The suspended organisations will now have to manage the specified flaws before they can aim to get restoration of their food licences back.
FDA Flags Multiple Food Safety Violations
Inspection teams reportedly observed many setbacks that raised concerns about handling of food and kitchen hygiene. Apart from cockroaches and flies in the food preparation areas, officials also noted poor housekeeping, inappropriate waste dumping, use of expired ingredients, structural damage inside the kitchen and inappropriate segregation of food preparation areas.
Reports also indicated deficiencies in keeping mandatory food safety records and storage norms. The FDA has claimed that such violations pose possible risks to consumers and deserve immediate action.
The Clubs That Have Got Notice And Why They Matter
The action has drawn attention as the licences that are suspended belong to some of the oldest and most prestigious members-only clubs of Mumbai.
Founded in 1933, the Cricket Club of India (CCI) is one of India's most famous sporting clubs and manages the Brabourne Stadium, which has hosted many international cricket matches. Along with its legacy, the club also runs multiple restaurants, cafés and banquets that can be used by members.

Willingdon Sports Club, founded in 1918, is among the oldest private clubs of Mumbai and is known for its sporting facilities, recreational areas and dining venues for members. Likewise, MIG Cricket Club in Bandra has played an important role in shaping the cricketing ecosystem of Mumbai for decades while also running restaurants and banquet spaces within its premises.
The remaining two clubs—RK Juhu Gymkhana and Aparna Juhu Gymkhana- are well-known suburban clubs that offer sports facilities along with restaurants that serve members and guests all through the day.
Part Of A Wider FDA Crackdown
These latest suspensions of licenses are not lone cases. Over the past few weeks, the Maharashtra FDA has been performing inspections across Mumbai and taking action against many well-known restaurants, cafes, bakeries and food businesses for hygiene-related offences. The controller has frequently stated that upholding food safety standards is compulsory regardless of an organisation's reputation or history.
While some members of the hospitality industry have asserted that businesses should be given adequate time to fix deficiencies before they lose their suspensions, the FDA has claimed that serious or repeated offences need immediate intervention to protect public health.
The latest action acts as a reminder that even some of the most specified institutions are expected to comply with the same food safety regulations that apply to every licensed food enterprise operating in the state.
