The first spell of rain totally changes the vibe of Bangalore. Tree-lined streets turn misty, and the familiar fragrance of rain-soaked earth gets mixed with the aroma of hot oil, roasted spices, and freshly brewed filter coffee wafting from darshinis and street-side stalls. For many people residing in Bangalore, rainy weather is not just about staying indoors, but it is more about stepping out to catch their favourite monsoon snack.
Unlike many cities where pakoras and samosas dominate the rainy season, Bangalore's rainy-day food culture is unexpectedly vast. From the crispy lentil fritters and fluffy banana buns to the spicy chaats and satisfying rice dishes, the food in this city mirrors influences from Karnataka's coast, old eateries, as well as neighbouring states.
Whether you are visiting the city or just want to explore its comfort foods beyond just the usual chai and pakora, these iconic dishes deserve a spot on your monsoon food trail.
Masala Vada
Golden, crisp, and extremely aromatic, masala vada is one of the most loved tea-time snacks of Bangalore. It is prepared by coarsely grinding the soaked chana dal with some chopped onions, green chillies, curry leaves, coriander, fennel, and ginger to make a flavourful mixture.
This mixture is then shaped into flat patties and deep-fried until it turns crunchy outside while staying a bit soft from within. Every bite has a light, earthy aroma that comes from lentils, bursts of spices and texture in every bite. It tastes best when paired with coconut chutney and a glass of filter coffee for the authentic experience.

Mangalore Buns
Despite the name, these are not buns but lightly sweet, fluffy fried breads hailing from the coast of Karnataka. For this, mashed ripe bananas are blended with flour, curd, sugar, cumin, and a little baking soda, and then the dough is kept resting for at least 7 to 8 hours.
Hereafter, it is rolled out and then fried until it puffs up and becomes beautifully golden. Soft, airy, and lightly sweet, Mangalore buns are traditionally enjoyed with coconut chutney or vegetable sagu (a curry made in Karnataka), making them perfect for breakfast or for drizzling afternoons.

Congress Kadlekai
Named after the Congress Grounds where it first became recognised, this spicy peanut snack has evolved as one of the most iconic street foods you can find in Bangalore. The name may sound like something too complex, but it is much simpler and an easy snack that appeals to every palate.
Roasted peanuts are tossed with some finely chopped onions, tomatoes, coriander, green chillies, grated carrot, chilli powder, lemon juice, and a special masala mixture that is made by street vendors. You get the taste of fresh, crunchy, spicy, and tangy all at once. It is the perfect snack while exploring the city and munching in between.

Maddur Vada
Hailing originally from the town of Maddur that falls between Bengaluru and Mysuru, this flat, crisp vada has turned out to be the city's go-to snack. Rice flour, maida, semolina, onions, curry leaves, green chillies, and spices are kneaded to make a smooth dough and then flattened and fried slowly.
Unlike the masala vada, Maddur vada is much thinner and crunchier, with a bit of flaky texture. Its savoury onion taste pairs perfectly with a cup of hot tea, making your tea time more exciting.

Khara Bath
Khara Bath is a warm semolina or suji dish that is cooked with lots of vegetables, chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies, curry leaves, and a plentiful tempering of mustard seeds and cashews. It is the Karnataka version of upma.
Khara bath is richly flavoured but comforting and is often enjoyed with Kesari Bath in the famous "Chow Chow Bath" combination. Have it piping hot, and it offers just the kind of hearty comfort that many desire when the weather takes a turn.
