Puris are a deep fried bread, originating from the Indian subcontinent and popular across much of the country. Some consume it as breakfast, others as a snack, and still others as a meal. The puri-sabji combination is a vastly popular one, familiar to Indians across the country. While the puri’s origin is ambiguous, there are several variations of the dish, like masala puri, beetroot puri, paneer stuffed puri, and more.

One such variation is the Palak Puri or the spinach puri, made by combining spinach with flour, carom seeds (ajwain), asafoetida (hing), water, and oil for cooking. It is made by simply adding spinach to the normal mix and frying it as usual.

Adding spinach is a great way of adding leafy greens to the diet that brings along with it several health benefits. Its antioxidants lower glucose levels in the body, aiding diabetes management. It also helps with better lung function, reducing risk of asthma attacks. The potassium in spinach helps manage blood pressure and since it's rich in water and fibre, it also helps with constipation and allows for better functioning of the digestive system. Its vitamin A content moisturises the hair and skin.
