Born in Mexico, Shrimp Tacos are a fun, flavourful dish to eat. They're made using tortillas, shrimp, shredded cabbage, salsa, sour cream, and cheese. The spice mix includes chilli powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. Top it off with a bit of lime juice, and a punchy kick of flavour is sure to come your way.

It seemingly descends from a tradition that's thousands of years old, when indigenous tribes of North America caught produce from the sea and wrapped it up in corn tortillas ground on stone. While most agree that the dish can be traced to Baja, California, there’s much debate about where exactly it originated from.

What experts do know for sure is that Baja’s culinary history is unique to its shores. One big influence were the 16th-century Spanish travellers who left behind their culinary traditions, which over time must have amalgamated with indigenous practices. Other travellers landed there too, and the cuisine was infused with Asian and European influences.

Over time, food stands have popped up all over Baja, experimenting with different seafare, and the Shrimp Taco in particular, probably came into existence around this time. In 1983, Ralph Rubio opened a restaurant specialising in Fish Tacos. Today, Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill has over 160 outlets across the US, lending the customisable dish global popularity.
