Made mostly with Assam or Darjeeling tea leaves and milk, with sugar or honey added based on taste, the Royal Milk Tea is a Japanese tea made in a saucepan. The simmering milk creates a rich and creamy drink. The process of making it is quite similar to the way Indian Chai is made, minus all the spices.

It started out as a commercial venture by Lipton, who began selling Royal Milk Tea across Japan in 1965. Among the series of tea recipes they created, this one has done particularly well.

Also called Japanese Milk Tea, today, the drink is massively popular. It is available in almost every cafe and tea room, and even served at several vending machines and convenience stores across the country. It’s consumed both hot and cold.

Make this easy recipe indulgent or healthy with your choice of milk and quantity of sweetener. You can also add a fruity syrup of your choice to give the drink a fresh, latte-like quality. Also, you could experiment with boba or tapioca pearls, adding them to the drink for an enhanced drinking experience.
