Yassa chicken, also known as chicken Yassa or poulet Yassa, hails from the Casamance region of Senegal in West Africa. It is Senegal's national dish. Yassa chicken is a stew that consists of chicken marinated in lemon, onions, and vinegar. It is a famous dish throughout the streets of West Africa. The flavours of mustard and sweet onion lead the way, making it an unusual yet satisfying combination of tastes and textures. Yassa chicken is a perfect example that shows how cooking is often a bundle of ideas and creativity. And, despite its complicated history, it's incredibly simple to make. It is a delicious dish cooked by frying marinated chicken and onions along with the chicken stock. Few ingredients are transformed into an exciting and comforting meal. Ingredients for Yassa Chicken Recipe

  • 6 piece chicken thighs
  • 4 Nos onions
  • 5 Nos garlic cloves
  • 1/4 cup peanut oil
  • 1/2 cup Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar/red wine vinegar
  • 2 Nos bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoon Black pepper
  • 1 Nos habanero
  • As required Salt totaste
  • 2 teaspoon bouillon powder/cubes
  • 3/4 cup chicken stock/water
  • 3/4 cup green olives
  • As required Parsley

Directions: Yassa Chicken Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Thinly slice the onions. Mince the garlic and habanero pepper. Take a bowl and mix lemon juice, apple cider, vinegar and peanut oil. Then add dijon mustard, minced garlic and habanero in a bowl. Now add bouillon powder, ginger powder, black pepper and salt.

step 2

  • STEP 1.In a big bowl add chicken pieces,sliced onions and pour the marinade over it,add bay leaves and mix all well.

  • STEP 1.Add peanut oil in a pan and heat it. Now place the marinated chicken into the pan and fry for 5-6 minutes from each side. Once fried take it out on a plate.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Now strain the onions from the marinade and fry it for 10 mins in the same pan.

step 5

  • STEP 1.After the onions are fried, place over the fried chicken onto them and pour with chicken stock and marinade mixture. Lastly cook for 25 minutes.
