  • 1/4 cup Jaggery, Grated
  • 0.13 cup Grated Coconut
  • 0.13 teaspoon Cardamom Powder

  • 1/4 cup Water

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, jaggery, grated coconut, cardamom powder, and baking soda.
  • STEP 2.Add water gradually and mix well to form a smooth batter.
  • STEP 3.Grease a steamer plate or idli molds with oil and pour the batter into them.
  • STEP 4.Garnish with cashews and raisins.
  • STEP 5.Steam the vattayappam for about 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • STEP 6.Once done, remove from the steamer and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • STEP 7.Cut into pieces and serve warm or at room temperature.
  • STEP 8.Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure to dissolve the jaggery completely in water before adding it to the batter.
  • You can adjust the sweetness of the vattayappam by adding more or less jaggery according to your taste.
  • If you don't have a steamer, you can also use a pressure cooker without the whistle to steam the vattayappam.
