  • 0.33 bunch Watercress, Chopped
  • 0.33 teaspoon Oil
  • 0.33 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 0.33 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • as needed A Few Curry Leaves
  • 0.33 Onion, Chopped
  • 0.17 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 0.17 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 0.33 teaspoon Ghee
  • 0.33 teaspoon Dried Red Chilies

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Pressure cook the lentils until soft and mushy.
  • STEP 2.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped watercress, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
  • STEP 5.Cook until the watercress is wilted.
  • STEP 6.Add the cooked lentils and mix well.
  • STEP 7.Using a masher, mash the lentils and watercress mixture to a coarse consistency.
  • STEP 8.In a separate pan, heat ghee and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and dried red chilies.
  • STEP 9.Pour this tempering over the mashed lentils and mix well.
  • STEP 10.Serve the watercress paruppu kadaiyal with steamed rice or roti.

Cooking Tips

  • You can adjust the spiciness of the dish by adding more or less red chili powder.
  • If you don't have watercress, you can substitute it with spinach or any other leafy green.
