Steamed toor dal cakes crumbled and sauteed with banana flower (vazhaipoo). Paruppu Usili is the crumbled soft dal which is combined with vegetables to make very delicious Poriyal variety or dry curry. How to Make Vazhaipoo Paruppu Usili Recipe

step 1

STEP 01

Into a grinding jar add 1 cup soaked toor dal after draining the water. Add salt to taste, 1 tsp hadi powder, 2 dry red chillies and grind to make a smooth paste.

Spoon this mixture into greased idli molds and steam on high for 10 minutes.

Into a bowl of water add ¼ cup of curd and mix well.

Peel the banana flower (vazhaipoo) and remove the centre stalk and the skin.

Soak the peeled flowers in the curd water mixture for 10 minutes. Drain the curd water and chop the vazhaipoo.

In a preheated pan add 1 tbsp sesame oil and the chopped vazhaipoo. Saute for a few seconds. Add ½ tsp turmeric powder and salt to taste and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes and mix well.

In a preheated pan, add 3 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds ,1 tsp split white urad dal and allow it to crackle and the dal to turn golden brown and crisp.

To this add 1 tsp asafoetida and 2 sprigs curry leaf. Saute for a few seconds.

Next add the steamed toor dal cakes. Break them into the pan and saute for 5 to 8 minutes until they form a crumble. To this add the cooked banana flower and stir well to combine . Turn off the heat.
