STEP 1.In a pressure cooker put 1 tbsp sesame (gingelly oil), add ½ tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp split white urad dal. Turn the heat to low and allow the seeds to roast and crackle till the urad dal turns golden and crispy.

STEP 1.Then add 2 sprigs curry leaf, 1 inch ginger finely chopped, 2 green chillies chopped, ½ cup freshly grated coconut, 2 cups rice rava and salt to taste.

STEP 1.Roast for a few seconds and mix well to combine all the ingredients. Add 4 cups of water and ½ tsp asafoetida. Stir to mix well.

STEP 1.Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles and allow the pressure to release naturally. Open the cooker and stir the upma and allow it to cool slightly.

STEP 1.While the upma is still warm, grease fingers and palms with sesame oil and take a small amount of upma in the hand, press it together and shape it into an oval ball.

STEP 1.Place the plates in the steamer and steam on high for 7 to 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and remove the kozhukattai from the steamer. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
