Unniyappam is a small round snack made from rice, jaggery, banana, roasted coconut pieces and cardamom powder fried in oil. Unniyappam is one of those special sweets snacks from Kerala and are also served in the Onam Sadya. They are also offered as prasad in some temples in Kerala. Prefer using raw rice. With rice flour the appams have a dense texture at times. It could be due to the organic rice flour that is mostly used while making these.

Ingredients for Unni Appam Recipe

  • 3 Tbsp water for diluting
  • 1 cup Jaggery
  • 5 g Coconut peices
  • 200 gram Rice
  • 2 No.s Banana
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cardamom
  • 2 teaspoon Ghee

Directions: Unni Appam Recipe

  • STEP 1.Rinse and soak rice for 4-5 hours.
  • STEP 2.In a mixer grinder add soaked rice and blend, then add bananas and blend again to form a paste, keep it aside.
  • STEP 3.In a pot at medium flame add 3tbsp of water and 1 cup of jaggery. Let the jaggery melt.
  • STEP 4.Then add coconut pieces and the rice paste prepared earlier.
  • STEP 5.Cook for 5 minutes at low flame, then add ½ tsp of ginger powder, 1 tsp of cardamom powder and 2 tsp of ghee.
  • STEP 6.Now heat the appam pan and add oil, once the pan is hot add this rice mix in the pan with a table spoon and fry both the sides .
  • STEP 7.Once the appam is brown in appearance, remove from the pan. Serve on a plate and enjoy.
