Originated from Malabar region in Kerala, unnakkaya is a very tasty delicious sweet snack. Unnakai is a spindle shaped sweet dessert made chiefly of plantain. It originated from the Malabar region of India, and is often eaten at weddings, Iftar and other festivities. The main ingredient of this dish is steamed and mashed plantain, which is a staple in Kerala, India.

Ingredients for Unnakkaya Recipe

  • 1/2 No.s Half ripe plantain
  • 0.17 tablespoon Ghee
  • 1/2 tablespoon Cashews
  • 1/2 tablespoon Raisins
  • 0.67 No.s Egg
  • 0.33 tablespoon Sugar
  • 0.17 teaspoon Cardamom powder

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash the plantains and peel off the skin. Cut horizontally into two halves. Cut each half vertically into three pieces.
  • STEP 2.Steam for 5 minutes in a closed vessel. Mash the boiled plantains.
  • STEP 3.To prepare the filling, add to a pan 3 tbsp cashews and 3 tbsp raisins with 1 tbsp ghee on a medium flame. Stir fry cashews and raisins.
  • STEP 4.Into the same pan break in 4 eggs, 2 tbsp sugar and 1tsp cardamom powder. Continue stirring till the mix is dry.
  • STEP 5.Make medium size balls from mashed plantains. Spread and flatten each ball on the palm with your fingers.
  • STEP 6.Stuff in the filling and roll to the shape of a spindle.
  • STEP 7.For frying: Preheat a deep fry pan with cooking oil on medium flame.
  • STEP 8.Gently drop each unnakkaya into the pan. Flip and fry both the sides till pale gold.
