Traditional sweet snack.Unnakkaya is delicious, sweet and traditional Kerala snack prepared mainly in the Northern Kerala (in Malabar, Kannur, Thalassery etc) during the Ramzan days. Its very popular in other parts of Kerala also during the Ramadan (Ramazan) fasting time. It is prepared by filling smashed bananas stuffed with cashew nuts, raisins and rice flakes.Unnakkaya is a good snack item which can fill the snack box and can be served as an evening snack for your kids. Ingredients for Unnakkaya Recipe

  • 0.40 No.s Ripe Banana
  • 2 No.s Cashew Nuts
  • 1/5 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1/5 tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 2 No.s Raisins
  • 0.15 cup Grated Coconut
  • 0.60 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1/5 pinch Salt
  • 1/20 teaspoon Cardamom Powder
  • As required Oil For Frying

Preparation Directions

  • STEP 1.Steam, cook the ripe banana.
  • STEP 2.Peel it and mash it.

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Heat a pan and add 1tsp ghee, 1tbsp coconut oil. Add 10 cashew nuts. Roast it in medium flame. Add 10 raisins, 1 cup grated coconut, 1/4tsp cardamom powder. Mix well.
  • STEP 2.Add a pinch of salt and 2-3tbsp sugar. MIx well. Turn off the flame.
  • STEP 3.Let it cool down. Take oil/ghee in a bowl.Grease a plate and your hand with oil/ghee.
  • STEP 4.Take the mashed banana and make a medium sized ball. Slightly press it with your fingers to make a thin circular layer.
  • STEP 5.Place the filling in the middle. Join the two opposite sides and close it. Roll it to give a cylindrical shape. Make sure there are no cracks. Place it in the greased plate.
  • STEP 6.Repeat step 4-5 for the rest of the mashed banana.
  • STEP 7.Heat oil in a pan and fry the unnakkaya in batches. Fry it in medium flame.
  • STEP 8.When all sides are golden brown take it out of oil.
  • STEP 9.Unnakkaya is ready to be served.

Special Comments

  • STEP 1.Removing the seeds of banana is optional.
  • STEP 2.If the water content is more in banana, add 1tbsp rice flour and mix well.
