When Surya Dev arrived at Shani Dev's house, Shani Maharaj worshiped father Surya with sesame seeds and jaggery and offered them to eat. The reason for this was that Shani Dev had nothing else after the burning of Kumbh in Shani Dev's house. ... Since that incident, the tradition of eating sesame and jaggery on Makar Sankranti is going on.
