Thotakura spinach is a very popular dish in Andhra Thotakura aka amaranth leaves are available in Vizag almost all year round and regular at our home. These fantastic power packed nutritious greens are usually used in dal, vepudu and pulusu preparations.The proteinous lentil and iron rich greens combine, thotakura pappu, is an earthy, tangy, healthy-tasting dal dish, which calls for the use of tamarind, other than onion, garlic and green chillis.

Ingredients for Thotakura Pappu Recipe

  • 1 cup Toor Dal
  • 3 Spinach medium size bundle
  • 2 Tomato
  • 10 green chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • As required Salt
  • 2 tablespoon Tamarind
  • 3 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Chana dal
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 4-5 Garlic Cloves
  • 4 Dry red chilies
  • 1 cup Chopped Onion
  • As required Curry leaves

Directions: Thotakura Pappu Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a pressure cooker add the soaked toor dal,spinach,diced tomato,sliced green chilies

step 2

  • STEP 2.Add turmeric powder,salt to taste,tamarind and ½ cup water

step 3

  • STEP 3.Cook until 5 whistle

step 4

  • STEP 4.Mix and smash well with a spoon

step 5

  • STEP 5.Heat oil in a pan

step 6

  • STEP 6.Add mustard seed.cumin seeds,chana dal,urad dal and let them pop

step 7

  • STEP 7.Add garlic cloves,dry red chilies,chopped onion and curry leaves and fry well

step 8

  • STEP 8.Add the cook spinach and mix well

step 9

  • STEP 9.Cover and cook for 5mins, then serve
