Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.In a pan, heat ghee and add grated coconut, jaggery, and cardamom powder. Cook until the mixture thickens.
  • STEP 2.In another pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, and curry leaves. Saute until the dals turn golden brown.
  • STEP 3.Add the cooked lentil mixture to the coconut-jaggery mixture and mix well. Allow it to cool.
  • STEP 4.In a separate pan, bring water to a boil and add salt. Slowly add rice flour and mix well to form a dough.
  • STEP 5.Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it. Place a spoonful of the sweet or savory filling in the center and shape it into a modak.
  • STEP 6.Steam the modaks in a steamer for about 10-15 minutes or until they are cooked.
  • STEP 7.Serve the sweet and savory modaks hot with ghee or enjoy them as a snack or dessert.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure to cook the lentils until they are soft and well-cooked.
  • If the dough is too dry, add a little more water. If it is too sticky, add a little more rice flour.
