A delicious tangy tomato flavoured rice. This easy, quick and delicious Tomato Rice recipe is a favorite dish from the Tamil Nadu state of South India. Also known as Thakkali Sadam in Tamil language, this one pot wonder is tasty, healthy and perfect to pack in a tiffin for lunch on the go. While this tomato rice is a tad spicy, you can easily adjust the heat to your liking. Serve it plain, or with crispy papad and boondi raita. It makes a wonderfully filling and light lunch.

Ingredients for Spicy Tomato Rice Recipe

  • 1 teaspoon Gingelly oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 10 No.s Sambar onions finely chopped
  • 1 inch Ginger grated
  • 1 sprig Curry leaf chopped
  • 3 No.s Tomatoes blanched, skinned and chopped fine
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 As required Sambar powder salt tsp
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cardamom powder
  • 1 cup Cooked Rice
  • As required Chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee

Directions: Spicy Tomato Rice Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pan add 1 tsp gingelly oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds. Allow to crackle.

  • STEP 1.Next add 10 finely chopped sambar (pearl) onions, 1 inch ginger grated, 1 sprig curry leaf chopped. Saute on medium heat till onions soften and begin to change colour.

  • STEP 1.Then add 3 blanched and skinned tomatoes chopped fine. Give it a stir. Add ½ tsp turmeric (haldi) powder, 1 tsp sambar powder, salt to taste. Mix well to combine all the masala with the tomato and onions. Add ½ tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder. Stir and cook for 1 to 2 minutes till

  • STEP 1.At this stage add 1 cup cooked rice. Gently mix to ensure that the rice gets well coated with the tomato masala but does not get smashed.

  • STEP 1.Turn the heat to low, cover the pan and let the tomato rice cook for 3 to 4 minutes so that all the flavours get absorbed by the rice.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Turn off the heat. Add chopped coriander leaves as required, add 1 tbsp ghee for flavour. Serve hot.
