Appe recipe is a classic south Indian dish that makes a great breakfast and evening snack. It is bite-sized dumplings that are crisp outside and soft inside and tastes delicious that gets ready in 15 minutes. Appe is known by various names in the southern part of India such as paddu, guliappa, paniyaram, gunta ponganalu.These are made in a special pan with multiple small moulds that look like an aebleskiver pan.

Ingredients for South Indian Appe Recipe

  • 1/20 cup rava / semolina / sooji
  • 0.19 cup cup curd / yogurt salt
  • 1/50 cup water
  • 1/10 tsp Oil
  • 1/20 inch Ginger (grated)
  • 1/20 g Green chilli finely chopped
  • 0.24 g curry leaves (chopped)
  • 1/10 tbsp Coriander leaves(finely chopped)
  • A Pinch Pinch baking soda

Directions: South Indian Appe Recipe

  • STEP 1.Firstly, in a large mixing bowl combine 1 cup rava, ¾ cup curd and ½ tsp salt.
  • STEP 2.mix well to form a paste without forming any lumps.
  • STEP 3.further add ½ cup water or as required.
  • STEP 4.mix well to form thick batter. keep aside.
  • STEP 5.in a kadai heat 2 tsp oil and saute 1 inch ginger, 1 green chilli and ½ onion.
  • STEP 6.Saute for a minute or till onions shrink slightly.
  • STEP 7.transfer the roasted onions into prepared rava batter.
  • STEP 8.also add 5 curry leaves, 2 tbsp coriander leaves and combine well.
  • STEP 9.rest for 20 minutes or until rava absorbs water.
  • STEP 10.furthermore add a pinch baking soda just before preparing appe and combine well.
  • STEP 11.Heat paniyaram pan / guliyappa pan / appe pan, add add few drops of oil inside the holes.
  • STEP 12.now fill the holes with a tbsp of sooji batter in each.
  • STEP 13.cover and simmer for a minute or until appe gets cooked slightly.
  • STEP 14.once the base turns golden, flip it over to the other side using a spoon.
  • STEP 15.simmer further and cook on low heat until it turns golden browns.
  • STEP 16.finally, serve instant rava paniyaram with tomato chutney or coconut chutney.
