Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • STEP 2.Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for a few minutes, or until softened.
  • STEP 3.Remove the leaves from the pot and set aside to cool.
  • STEP 4.In a bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, and spices.
  • STEP 5.Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly combined.
  • STEP 6.Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go.
  • STEP 7.In a large pot, spread a layer of sauerkraut on the bottom.
  • STEP 8.Place the stuffed cabbage rolls on top of the sauerkraut.
  • STEP 9.Pour the tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls, making sure they are fully covered.
  • STEP 10.Cover the pot and simmer for 1-2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are tender.
  • STEP 11.Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
