Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Pressure cook the lentils with water, turmeric powder, and salt until soft.
  • STEP 2.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies. Saute for a minute.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  • STEP 5.Add the tamarind pulp, sambar powder, and cooked lentils. Mix well and bring to a boil.
  • STEP 6.Add the chopped vegetables and cook until they are tender.
  • STEP 7.Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or idli.

Cooking Tips

  • You can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) for additional flavor.
  • Adjust the quantity of sambar powder according to your taste preference.
  • You can add a teaspoon of jaggery to balance the tanginess of the tamarind.
