In 1923, a well-heeled prohibitionist sponsored a $200 contest to come up with a word to describe a lawless drinker of illegally-made or illegally-obtained liquor. Scofflaw won the contest, but by the next year it was the name of everyones favorite cocktail. Bartenders are historically a cheeky tribe, and this little story is a wonderful gem even if it isnt true.
