A traditional rice based dish popular for its sweet fresh flavours of seafood and rich flavour.Sampan congee, consisting of peanuts, fish meat and other seafood, It is said that in the past the Sampan Congee was first served by scholars and tourists who took a boat tour in the suburbs of Guangzhou, later, many local restaurants began to prepare such Congee and people now can taste Sampan Congee everywhere in Guangzhou.

Ingredients for Sampan Congee Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Washed rice
  • 4 cup Water for cooking rice
  • 3 ounce Char siu thinly sliced
  • 3 ounce Squid sliced
  • 3 ounce Sliced fish
  • 3 piece Peeled shrimp cut into big oz
  • 1/2 cup Shredded carrot + for garnish
  • 1/2 cup Shredded cabbage + for garnish
  • As required Chopped coriander for garnish
  • As required Peanuts for garnish
  • As required Deep fried wonton skins for garnish
  • As required Ingredients for seasoning
  • 2 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon White pepper powder
  • 2 teaspoon Ginger juice
  • 1 teaspoon Chicken powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil

Directions: Sampan Congee Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.1 for the seasoning, 2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp white pepper powder, 2 tsp ginger juice, 1 tsp chicken powder (optional), 1 tsp sesame oil (optional). Keep aside.

step 2

  • STEP 2.2 in a rice cooker add ½ cup washed rice and add 4 cups of water. Set the cooker to ‘congee’ setting. Water can be added while cooking to balance it if it cooks dry.

  • STEP 3.3 transfer the rice and liquid into a large cooking pot. As the rice cooks further in the process it will thicken, so add a little more water when transferring to the pot.

  • STEP 4.4 cover and bring it to a boil.

  • STEP 5.5 when the rice is boiling add 3 oz of thinly sliced pork. Stir to separate the pieces.

  • STEP 6.6 next add 3 oz sliced char siu which give the congee a richness. Cover and cook for 3 minutes.

  • STEP 7.7 next add 3 oz sliced squid, 3 oz sliced fish and 3 oz peeled shrimp cut into pieces. Stir to separate the pieces after adding each of the sea food.

  • STEP 8.8 add ½ cup shredded carrot and ½ cup shredded cabbage.

step 9

  • STEP 9.9 lastly add the prepared seasoning. Stir till the seasoning has dissolved and combined with the congee. Add salt to adjust the flavour. Turn off the heat.

step 10

  • STEP 10.10 serve the congee in a serving bowl and garnish with chopped coriander, shredded carrot, shredded cabbage, crushed deep fried wonton skins and roasted peanuts.

  • STEP 11.11 sampan congee is ready.
