A tasty and healthy poriyal made with purple (red) cabbage. The Cabbage that is also called as Muttaikose in tamil is power cooked with a very simple seasoning if mustard seeds, curry leaves, salt and freshly grated coconut. The purple cabbage adds in a lot of color and makes your meal plate look colorful as well. The Purple Cabbage Poriyal/ Muttaikose Poriyal Recipe is a very traditional South Indian dry vegetable made from cabbage. Ingredients for Purple Cabbage Poriyal Recipe

  • 500 gram Purple cabbage sliced/ chopped
  • 2 tablespoon Water
  • 1 teaspoon Coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Split urad dal
  • 2 Green chillies split
  • 2 sprig Curry leaf torn
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 1/4 cup Coconut freshly grated

Directions: Purple Cabbage Poriyal Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a pressure cooker put 500 gms chopped or sliced purple cabbage, add 2tbsp water and 1 tsp salt. Pressure cook till 2 whistles and turn off the heat.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Immediately release the pressure by lifting the weight with a fork or holding the cooker under running water. This retains the colour and the texture of the cabbage.

  • STEP 1.In a hot pan add 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp split urad dal.stir till the mustard splutters and the urad dal turns golden brown and crisp. This adds crunch and taste to the dish.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Then add 2 split green chillies and 2 sprigs of roughly torn or chopped curry leaf. Stir for a few seconds. Add ¼ tsp asafoetida and the cooked purple cabbage.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Lastly, add ¼ cup of freshly grated coconut. Mix well and turn off the heat.
