It is a nutritious and a wholesome dish which goes very well with rice or poori. This dal is prepared with Buta dali or Chana dal or Bengal gram, along with bay leaf, potato, pumpkin, ginger, and coconut, mostly on festive occasions and does not include onion or garlic in it. Ingredients for Pumpkin Chana Dal Masala Recipe

  • 1 Chana dal up
  • 1 cup WHite pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoon Ginger garlic chopped
  • 2-3 Green chillies for garnishing Nos
  • 1.50 teaspoon Salt
  • 1.50 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon Jeers seeds
  • As required Coriander leaves chopped for garnish
  • 2 Onions medium chopped Nos
  • 2 Tomatoes large chopped Nos
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 2 cup Water

Directions: Pumpkin Chana Dal Masala Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.1 preheat a pressure cooker and add 2 tbsp oil and allow it to heat. Add 1 tsp jeera seeds and let them splutter. Add 2 tbsp chopped ginger garlic and saute for a few seconds till aromas are released.

  • STEP 2.2 next add 2 chopped onions and saute till the onions are browned. Add a little salt to help onions brown faster.

  • STEP 3.3 add 2 chopped large tomatoes, 1 ½ tsp red chilli powder, ½ turmeric powder and salt. Cook till tomatoes are soft. Mix well with the masala.

  • STEP 4.4 then add 1 cup washed chana dal, 1 cup chopped white pumpkin and mix well. Add chopped coriander and 2 cups of water.

step 5

  • STEP 5.5 pressure cook the dal for 2 to 3 whistles. Then turn to low heat for 5 to7 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release.

step 6

  • STEP 6.6 dal should be cooked soft by this time. If it is too thick add more water to make a thinner consistency as desired. Simmer on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes.

step 7

  • STEP 7.7 add 2 to 3 chopped green chillies for garnish and remaining chopped coriander.
