Tamarind (puli) and ginger (inji) cooked with spices and jaggery and served as an accompaniment with upma etc. Injipuli is a dark brown sweet-sour and spicy Keralite curry made of ginger, tamarind, green chillies and jaggery. It is also a part of Tamil Nadu cuisine. It is also known as puli inji in some parts of Kerala, South India. It is served as part of the Sadhya, or virunthu by the Tamil community. You have to try this slip smacking Puli Inji Recipe which is a sweet, spicy and tangy Tamarind and Ginger Chutney perfect to have along with dosa, parathas and especially Upma Kozhukattai for breakfast.

Ingredients for Puli Inji Recipe

  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Methi seeds
  • 2 tablespoon Ginger finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon Green chillies finely chopped
  • 2 sprig Curry leaf
  • 1 cup Tamarind water
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 3 tablespoon Jaggery
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon Sambar powder
  • As required Salt

Directions: Puli Inji Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pan add 1 tbsp sesame oil, ¼ tsp mustard seeds, ¼ tsp methi seeds, 2 tbsp finely chopped ginger, 2 tbsp finely chopped green chillies, 2 sprigs of curry leaf, 1 cup tamarind water, ¼ tsp red chilli powder, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 3 tbsp jaggery and salt to taste. Mix all the ingredients.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Bring to a boil and add 1/4 tsp asafoetida and 1 tsp sambar powder. Simmer for 15 minutes until the gravy thickens. Serve hot with upma.
