  • 0.13 cup Toor Dal
  • 1/4 Onion, Chopped
  • 1/2 Tomatoes, Chopped
  • as per your need Assorted Vegetables
  • 1/4 tablespoon Sambar Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1/4 tablespoon Oil
  • 0.13 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 0.13 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • as required A Few Curry Leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sambar Masala

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and cook the lentils until soft. Set aside.
  • STEP 2.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped onions, tomatoes, and vegetables of your choice. Cook until they are soft.
  • STEP 4.Add sambar powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
  • STEP 5.Add the cooked lentils and water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • STEP 6.In a separate pan, heat ghee and fry the sambar masala until fragrant. Add it to the sambar.
  • STEP 7.Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or idli.

Cooking Tips

  • You can use a mix of vegetables like carrots, beans, drumsticks, and brinjal.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less sambar powder.
  • For a thicker consistency, mash some of the cooked lentils before adding them to the sambar.

Storage and Serving

  • Leftover sambar can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the sambar on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.
  • Serve plain sambar with steamed rice, idli, dosa, or vada for a delicious and satisfying meal.
