It is also known as the Farmer's meal in the state. Pithla is a traditional Maharashtrian dish made using chickpea flour or besan. Here is how to make it. A popular comfort food that most Maharashtrians like to enjoy with their family. The cuisine has subtle variety and strong flavours and varies from region to region. In ancient times in the more affluent homes, feasts often started at mid-day and ended when the sun set. The presentation of food was alluring with a practice to sing sacred verses to dedicate the meal to God.

Ingredients for Pithla Bhakri Recipe

  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • pinch Hing
  • 8 Curry leaves ~10
  • 1 cup Besan
  • As required Garlic Green chili paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • As required Salt
  • As required Finely chopped Coriander leaves

step 1

  • STEP 1.Heat up oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them pop up. Add cumin seeds let them splutter. Add hing, curry leaves and onion. ix well and fry until the onions get golden brown. Take besan to a bowl and add water. Mix well to make paste and no lumps should be formed.

step 2

  • STEP 1.When onion begins to turn light golden add garlic-green chili paste, turmeric powder and mix well. Fry everything well for about a minute. You can use chopped garlic and chilli. Add the besan mixture, salt and mix well.

step 3

  • STEP 1.Cook on medium heat stirring continuously until it thickens up a little. Cover up and cook on medium flame for 7-8 minutes. Pithla is ready. serve with some chopped coriander.
