One best recipe to prepare when you are out of vegetables in the kitchen. It is a side dish made from onions. Thoran, also known as Upperi in some parts of Kerala, is one of the authentic dishes of the state. It is a general term for anything (mostly vegetables) that is sautéed with a lots of grated coconut. It is usually served along with rice. Ulli Thoran is very delicious and not a very common variety of Thoran in which Onion is the main ingredient. This dish can be prepared very easily and requires very little ingredients.

Ingredients for Onion Thoran Recipe

  • 2 cup Finely Chopped Onion
  • 2 No.s Green chilly
  • 3 Ginger pods
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • As required Curry leaves a few
  • 2 No.s Dry red chilly
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 cup Grated coconut

Directions: Onion Thoran Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Crush in a grinder 1 cup of grated coconut, 2 green chilly, 3 garlic pods. Keep aside.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Pour about 3 tbsp oil in a pan. Add 1 tsp mustard seeds into oil and wait till it splutters.

step 3

  • STEP 1.Then add dry red chilly and a few curry. Saute well.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Transfer the 2 cups of chopped onion and saute till it becomes tender.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Add a pinch of salt to taste and ¼ tsp turmeric powder. Continue stirring on medium flame.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Cook with the lid on for 2 minutes of time.

step 7

  • STEP 1.Add the crushed ingredients and again cook with the cover for next 2 minutes.

step 8

  • STEP 1.Turn off the flame and serve the dish into a plate.
