  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 0.13 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon Ghee Or Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • pinch A Pinch Of Asafoetida
  • 1/4 Onion, Finely Chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 Tomatoes, Finely Chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • as needed Chopped Coriander Leaves For Garnish

Directions: Maharashtrian Varan/dal Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  • STEP 3.In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida. Let them splutter.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  • STEP 5.Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  • STEP 6.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
  • STEP 7.Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  • STEP 8.Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix everything together. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • STEP 9.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

Cooking Tips

  • You can adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more or less water.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a dollop of ghee on top of the dal before serving.
  • You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice for a tangy twist.

Storage and Serving

  • Leftover dal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the dal on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.
