A Mangalorean preparation of sprouted green moong dal, simmered in roasted and ground coconut and spices. It is the combination of sprouted Moong and potatoes are cooked in a rich gravy made of coconut, roasted spices, onion, garlic and tamarind. This recipe is usually prepared on festivals like Gokulashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra etc

Ingredients for Moong Dal Gassi Recipe

  • As required Ingredients for dal
  • 2 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 Onion finely chopped Nos
  • 2 Tomatoes finely chopped Nos
  • 1 cup Sprouted green moong dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • As required Salt
  • 1 cup Tamarind water
  • As required Ingredients for ground masala
  • 2 teaspoon Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 Dry red chillies
  • 1 cup Coconut freshly ground
  • 1/4 cup Warm water for grinding
  • As required Ingredients for Tempering
  • 1 teaspoon Mustards seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Split white urad dal
  • 2 Red chillies broken Nos
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 4 Garlic whole cloves

Directions: Moong Dal Gassi Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Soak 1 cup green moong dal for 8 hours, strain off the water and leave the dal to sprout for 5 to 6 hours.

step 2

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pressure cooker, add 1 tsp oil, 1 onion finely chopped. Saute till the onion becomes soft. Then add 2 tomatoes finely chopped and mix.

  • STEP 1.Next add 1 cup sprouted green moong dal, ½ tsp turmeric powder, salt to taste, 1 cup tamarind water and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles and turn off the heat.

  • STEP 1.For the gassi masala, in a preheated pan add 2 tsp coriander seeds, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 2 dry red chillies. Roast on medium heat for about 1 minutes till the aroma of roasting spices comes through. Then add 1 cup freshly ground coconut and saute for a few seconds.

  • STEP 1.Transfer the roasted ingredients to the small grinder jar, add ¼ cup warm water and blend to a smooth paste. Add more water if required while grinding.

  • STEP 1.Once the ground masala is ready , add it to the cooked moong dal in the pressure cooker. Add ½ cup water to get a gravy consistency. Mix well and bring it to a brisk boil for 3 to 4 minutes until it all comes together. Turn off the heat and keep aside.

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pan add 1 tsp oil, 1 tsp mustards seeds ,1 tsp split white urad dal and saute. Allow the seeds to crackle and the dal to turn golden and crisp.

step 8

  • STEP 1.At this stage add 2 broken red chillies, 1 sprig curry leaves and 4 whole garlic cloves. Roast for 1 to 2 minutes till the garlic begins to change colour to golden.

step 9

  • STEP 1.Transfer the moong dal gassi to a serving bowl and pour the tempering over it. Serve hot with steamed rice.
