How to Make Moong Dal Gassi Recipe

Soak 1 cup green moong dal for 8 hours, strain off the water and leave the dal to sprout for 5 to 6 hours.

step 2

In a preheated pressure cooker, add 1 tsp oil, 1 onion finely chopped. Saute till the onion becomes soft. Then add 2 tomatoes finely chopped and mix.

step 3

Next add 1 cup sprouted green moong dal, ½ tsp turmeric powder, salt to taste, 1 cup tamarind water and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles and turn off the heat.

step 4

For the gassi masala, in a preheated pan add 2 tsp coriander seeds, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 2 dry red chillies. Roast on medium heat for about 1 minutes till the aroma of roasting spices comes through. Then add 1 cup freshly ground coconut and saute for a few seconds.

step 5

Transfer the roasted ingredients to the small grinder jar, add ¼ cup warm water and blend to a smooth paste. Add more water if required while grinding.

step 6

Once the ground masala is ready , add it to the cooked moong dal in the pressure cooker. Add ½ cup water to get a gravy consistency. Mix well and bring it to a brisk boil for 3 to 4 minutes until it all comes together. Turn off the heat and keep aside.

step 7

In a preheated pan add 1 tsp oil, 1 tsp mustards seeds ,1 tsp split white urad dal and saute. Allow the seeds to crackle and the dal to turn golden and crisp.

step 8

At this stage add 2 broken red chillies, 1 sprig curry leaves and 4 whole garlic cloves. Roast for 1 to 2 minutes till the garlic begins to change colour to golden.

step 9

Transfer the moong dal gassi to a serving bowl and pour the tempering over it. Serve hot with steamed rice.
