A cassava vegetable broth seasoned with spices. Root vegetables and coconut milk are really all you need to make metemgee. Everything else just complements these ingredients. In Guyana root vegetables are called ground provision. Imagine yuca (cassava), sweet potatoes and malanga are bathed in coconut milk and cooked to perfection. The rich coconut milk broth is what makes metemgee stand out. To make the broth, sauté onion and garlic in coconut oil which compliments the flavor of the coconut milk.

Ingredients for Metemgee Recipe

  • 2 No.s cassavas
  • 1 No.s large sweet potato
  • 1 No.s large yam
  • 2 No.s ripe/yellow plantains
  • 1 No.s yellow onion, diced
  • 4 No.s cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 No.s wiri wiri peppers
  • 5 sprig fresh thyme
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 10 cup Water
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 pinch Black pepper

Directions: Metemgee Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Heat some coconut oil in a pan and saute minced garlic and chopped onions in it until the onions turn translucent.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Now add coconut milk, thyme, water, peppers and season it with salt and peppers.

step 3

  • STEP 1.Bring the broth to boil and lower the flame and let it simmer for 10 minutes.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Add cassava and the other vegetables to the broth. Cook until cassava becomes tender.
